Interview with The British Museum showcased Artist Leah Liu. Edited by Anara Emil

A.R. Hi Leah! First, could you please tell our readers a little bit
about yourself.

L.Y. Hi Aizhan, first I want to say, I always believes it was the right time to meet someone; I was very pleased to meet you on the BUZZ CLOUD PARTY. At that time, you walked towards me with that unique temperament and exotic fashion style, which impressed me a lot and has been deeply fixed in my memory ever since.

A.R. Thank you so much Leah! (smiling)

I devote myself to Contemporary Art, in the pursuit of ideology and visibility combination. I would love to keep this feeling and touching relationship between every origin and ourselves. Start from the heart, and then return to my innermost being.

I have a partner, her name is Neena. Together we have created separate platforms for contemporary and luxury artists. Through these platforms we want to recommend contemporary artists and their works, plan Contemporary Art Exhibitions in public spaces, build the “Drunk·Art” brand, and assist those art enthusiasts to collect art works.

A.R. When did you realize that you want to be an artist?

L.Y. To become an artist was my dream since very childhood. When I look back now, I can see even if there were some deviations from my original dream due to some objective reasons, I would still go back to my dream and finally realize it. It has been a really long way for my dream to be fulfilled, but when you get there, this when you can say “a dream comes true”.

In somebody’s life, if he or she has a dream and is ready to keep fighting for it, the road would be truly enjoyable and cheerful.
Hard work always pays off. I believe in causal relationship and law of balance, among which time is just the ruler.

A.R. What inspires you when create art pieces? What affected vision and style of your work?

L.Y. Open the door to my heart ......

Imagination would never emerge out of the void. It is inspired by one’s life experience, visual dimensions, scope of knowledge, present focus etc.

As an individual, one shall stand in the middle, explore the origins inwards and look up to the universe outwards......

A.R. Who is your favorite artist?

L.Y. I used to ask myself, but no answer to this question. You know what it means when it refers to a question without any answer......

A.R. How would you describe China's contemporary art?

L.Y. From traditional painting to current multimedia art. From our walk to a work piece quietly with appreciation and interpretation to other audience’s engagement. From persistent cling to art exchange between mutual scopes. This is the relationship between you and me, front and reverse side, black and white poles. I mentioned multiple relationships within which you can feel the surprise you would never expect. This is the development......

In China, you can see a variety of contemporary art forms and exhibitions, communications etc.

As long as you walk out and enter into the world of art perceiving by yourself, is better than listening to my description. This is what I call “everyone’s involvement”.

When we feel drunk by the art, we will capture the peace to the soul.

A.R. How would you define your style?

L.Y. Artists would not rush to define their own artistic style, at least I will not to.

But sometimes, when I am surrounded by silent atmosphere, I find myself falling into a journey of meditation.

Nothing will ever be eternal, and everything is just located in its temporary trajectory, from the start to the end......

Therefore, my current state of mind can be described as “an incoming attitude, a leaving style, pursuing the origin of universal inspirations”.

A.R. Your «Terracotta warrior» pieces is so popular, what is the story behind creating this series?

L.Y. I have spent over 10 years creating «Terracotta warrior» pieces, which is the reflection of my psychology and attitude.

Many national galleries, art salons, institutions and individuals have collected those pieces. I often think about those collected pieces, I miss those days and nights when I devote myself to its creation. Those pieces are just like my lover, with whom I experienced the complicated feelings from the very beginning untils falling apart.

In my work, I interpret those terracotta warriors 2000 years ago with contemporary culture. There are a variety of implied meanings within these terracotta warriors. In my work, I just transform these ancient warriors into fashion pioneer, melting the gender gap, expanding beyond the time and space, which act as international cultural ambassador.

A.R. What are 3 key aspects of being successful artist in your opinion?

L.Y. The definition of success is too broad, like a pyramid built by elites in different areas who overthrew something or awoke something.

I don’t want to define myself this way in the early stage. I just want to position myself in a sustainable space and exert my maximum likelihood. Keep constructing...overturning...upgrading values.

I love these 3 words really a lot: sensitivity, wisdom and passion.

A.R. What is your goal for the next 10 years?

L.Y. It’s not about whether it is a road or not, the point is whether you want to go.

If we are saying on a daily basis, I want to enjoy the current state.

If we are saying on a monthly basis, I want to break new ground for the future.

If we are saying on a yearly basis, I will be still on the road with dream and reality.

10 year, 10 years, 10 years......In my next 10 years, I also cannot wait to see myself what will happen to me.

In my plan, it seems I can see the truth of the future, although with a little bit illusions somehow.

I prefer to follow my heart in order experience the next 10 years, and to commit myself to composing pieces, to work with my partner Neena, and to promote artists and their works in public space via art exhibitions...

This is my style.

Thanks for your interview and have a nice day.

Interview with The British Museum showcased Artist Leah Liu. Edited by Anara Emil

on the left is Leah and on the right is Neena

A.R. Leah,

L.Y. «terracota warrior»《
